Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and lies directly on the Mediterranean coast closeting the shoreline with unique rich historical architecture. Although it reached its pinnacle of tourism during the mid-nineties, Barcelona remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain and Europe due to its heavily pedestrian friendly centre and has plenty to offer in the way of churches, markets, museums, and shops, not to mention nightlife.
One of the most popular tourist locations is found directly by the beach and named by the locals “La Rambla.” Here you can casually stroll through the tree-lined pedestrian walkway on your way to the beach or for a meal and take in plenty of street performers, flower sellers, café’s, and artists working in public.
August is the peak holiday season in Barcelona and also the best time to head to the city due to the fact there are cheaper accommodation rates and the city quiets down overall, however, the flip side is that this is due to the fact that most Spaniards head for holiday in August, which means that about ten percent of the shops will be closed. Travel during off season is also recommended so long as rain is not in the forecast.
Barcelona offers a wide variety of hotels and hostels that total over 750, and even more guest houses and apartments providing a budget friendly option for every traveller and plenty of room to splurge. The W Barcelona stands out within the city due to its unique design by Ricardo Bofill. Also popular is the Hotel Diagonal Zero due to the fact it sits right across the way from the beaches.
