Dublin

One good description of the capital city of Ireland is that it is full of Irish folk who know how to have a good time and how to share it with visitors.  That is, of course, only one good description.  Others would include ‘cosmopolitan’, ‘sociable’ and “a great crack.”

Though visitors will find Dubliners (or Dubs) complaining about all sorts of things including the weather, they also find the complaints are almost always humorous and more than tolerant.  On average, it rains in Dublin 150 days out of the year, but almost never freezes or gets too hot, so bring an umbrella and a jacket and you’re set.

One classic example of Dublin’s attractions is the Guinness Storehouse and St. James’ Gate Brewery, where the Guinness story is told in extravagant hi-tech detail, and the Gravity Bar gives you a chance to review the product.  More than 400 million litres of the potent ale are brewed here every year.

Should you prefer more lofty entertainment, visit Glasnevin Cemetery.  The tour is free on Wednesdays and Fridays at 14:30, and the tour guide is noted and notorious for his commentary on what Dubs refer to as “Croak Park”.

Hotels in the central area of Dublin is pricey between £60 and £140 per night on average, but if you can’t afford, for instance, the Paramount or the Gresham Hotel, check the options just a few minutes away by bus.  Both trendy and gracious, La Stampa Hotel, is only five minutes from central O’Connell Street, and many others such as Charleville Lodge and the Castle Hotel offer top quality at dramatically lower cost.
