Madrid is the capital of Spain and is known for its artistic heritage and great cultural sensibilities, both of which can be perfectly represented with just one simple trip to the El Prado museum. Outside of the great culinary treats and the vibrant nature of the locals, Madrid is also a top tourist location due to its lively nightlife making it one of the most visited cities in the world. It also is favoured by tourists because it experiences consistent sunshine for the most part, although the winter season gets quite rainy.
While in Madrid the most popular stops include Palacio Real, which is a large palace filled with plenty of medieval artefacts, the Plaza Mayor which is the largest and best known plaza in Madrid, built directly outside the city walls and home to frequent festivals, El Retiro the equivalent of London’s Hyde Park has activities and sights to thrill any visitor. Gran Via is home to high end shopping, plays, nightlife, and a great number of cinemas.
For those who are not familiar with the area once arriving one should take care to grab the PopGuide Madrid newspaper, which features the best in nightlife, fashion, and art in the area and the InMadrid newspaper which is published once a month for free, and details all the events, bars, and parties that are happening around the city.
Of course, while in Madrid you will need accommodations which are easy to find regardless of what you can afford to spend, with everything from hostels such as Los Amigos Backpackers Hostel to the mid-range options of the Hotel San Antonio de la Florida, Abba Atocha Hotel, and Hostal Plaza d’Ort to the glamorous hotel options which include Adler Hotel, Hotel Villa Magna, and the Gran Melia Fenix.
