There are those who will dare to argue that Venice is not the most beautiful city in the world, but they are certainly not Venetians, nor anyone that has actually visited this fabulous city. Venice is truly one of a kind city spread across 118 islands; it is literally built on the water. Anywhere that can’t be reached by walking requires a boat ride, and both the boats and the bridges are the stuff of romantic legend.
Founded in the 5th century, the city has known glory and riches to rival any on Earth, and even now, with its ongoing battle against rising tides, the art, culture, mystery and romance of Venice exert a compelling attraction that is only enhanced by actually being there.
You cannot miss the Grand Canal, or the Basilica San Marcos on St. Mark’s Square, but take the time to look around for some of the other less famous but utterly delightful sites that can be found just by walking off the beaten path. The fastest way to travel is by motorised vaporetto, but a man-powered gondola is unbeatable if you just want to truly enjoy Venice.
If you can afford luxury hotels right on the Grand Canal, there are plenty of choices, such as the Hotel Danieli (residence of kings), the Hotel Cipriana or the Gritti Palace. However, in nearby areas there are many delightful hotels and inns, like the Locanda Florito or the Locanda Leon Bianco where rates are much lower and charm is never lacking.
